Although John Grisham seems an unlikely candidate for a juvenile biography, the other three subjects have plenty of younger fans. They may be disappointed by these tepid biographies, however, which chart professional successes and never get beyond admiring press-kit insights into personal lives. Muddy black-and-white photographs illustrate the texts. Time lines are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 5^-8. The latest offering in the People in the News series features John Grisham, best-selling author of legal fiction. After graduating from law school in 1981, Grisham served two terms in the Mississippi House of Representatives while continuing to work as an attorney. During that time he published three books, two of which were made into movies. With his financial future assured, he became a full-time writer. Today he avoids the spotlight as much as possible, focusing on his family and community activities. This accessible, laudatory biography will fill the bill for young Grisham fans curious about a favorite author or in need of background information for reports. Black-and-white photos throughout; notes and reading lists appended. --Karen Hutt

Gr 6 Up-Superb biographies of two blockbuster authors. Each book summarizes the writer's work and contributions, offers an overview of his early life and influences, and later chapters show the development of his career. The final section discusses current and future projects. Both authors include inspiring or humorous anecdotes about their subjects that are sure to appeal to this age group. Weaver discusses Grisham's unique contribution to the genre of the legal thriller. Young readers will be able to identify with his early dreams of a baseball career and his struggles in school. Wukovits discusses King's early influences in a brief introduction to the horror genre as it existed at the time the author began to write. He also examines his subject's ability to bridge the gap between horror novels and mainstream fiction. Black-and-white photographs from the film and television adaptations of both men's work enhance both of these compelling biographies. Outstanding selections.-Leah J.
