Here, finally, is a shopper's guide to pre-Columbian and North American Indian art that will facilitate the aesthetic appreciation, connoisseurship and accumulation of these objects. Unabashedly defending the controversial practice of collecting Native American art, the authors argue that it is just another fine art commodity, dismissing the claims of scientific archeology, national patrimony, ethnic pride and religious practice that challenge the propriety of this position. The book is divided into separate sections on pre-Columbian and North American material culture, and outlines the various regions and standard types of collectible items from each area. Six hundred illustrations of varying quality, 100 of them in color, with detailed captions, provide useful information about stylistic features, dating and, sometimes, iconography. An appendix lists dealers, auction houses, specialized bookstores, a glossary of terms and a bibliography for each area. Johnson is a dealer of tribal and ancient art, Griffin curates Princeton's pre-Columbian collection and Furst is professor emeritus of anthropology at the State University of New York. (Dec.) Ostensibly designed to guide and encourage the collection of Pre-Columbian and American Indian art objects "that are equal in quality to any ever created [and which] are still within the means of large numbers of collectors," this curious volume is inadequate and misleading because its 600 fine illustrations, 100 of them in color, are accompanied by far-too-short essays on the history, epochs, regions, ethnic groups, media, styles, and types of these extremely complex arts. While this orderly presentation of mostly little-known examples of many types of art is useful enough for beginning students, it cannot begin to "guide" any collector away from the infinitely subtle forgeries that abound, even if one can afford the four, five, and six figures they cost. The index of museums and bibliography are equally incomplete, but more alarming is the cavalier treatment of the serious moral and political problems of what many see as grave-robbing, despoiling of unstudied archaeological sites, desecration of religious monuments, and the dispersal of objects of ethnic and national heritage to provide these superb objects that greedy dealers and irresponsible collectors seek so avidly. Traditional pre-Columbian and American Indian arts are the focus of this composite scholarly survey, identification guide, and collecting handbook. Brief histories of the indigenous arts of each region are followed by illustrations that systematically present examples of basic categories of works. The introduction, ``On Collecting,'' discusses collecting controversies, sources of objects, various kinds of collections, identification, fakes and forgeries, restoration and repairs, protection and security, buying from dealers, and the current market. Maps and charts show the locations and chronicle the history of the cultures and peoples included. The appendix lists selected museums, dealers, auctions, and a one-page glossary. An authoritative and specialized survey/guide for collectors, dealers, curators, anthropologists, and other experts in the field.-- Russell Clement, Brigham Young Univ. Lib., Provo, Ut .
