In this diverse but fairly soft collection of brief and more-or-less modern poems about dreams, a Sioux dreams of a buffalo, the Aztecs dream of corn, Eve Merriam makes a singsong rhyme of Martin Luther King's dream, Christopher Meyer dreams of starving Biafrans, and Karla Kuskin merely lists dream subjects. A ""Night Crow"" jars Theodore Roethke's memory of a ""tremendous bird"" receding ""deep in the brain/ far back""; William Stafford's ""Sleeping on the Sisters Land"" introduces a personal note far distant from the tinkly ones struck by John Ciardi, David McCord, and other children's writers; and Langston Hughes is well represented with a number of dream poems, including ""Harlem"" (""What happens to a dream deferred?"") which brings some pay-attention, down-to-earth reality to a collection that contains some strong selections but leaves a slightly wispy impression overall. The poems are illustrated in the current mode with pseudo-poetic photos, a questionable practice for juvenile poetry anthologies and a particularly dubious one for poems about dreams.
