摘要
The "Cornerstones of Freedom" detail important events in United States history. Children are given the sense of being witnesses to history-in-the-making and contemporaries of famous people who helped shape the United States into the world power it is today. Starting with the Spring 1992 titles, a brand-new format has been introduced using more photographs (many in full-color), historical engravings, and an easy-to-read typeface. Many popular previously published titles will be updated in this new format. Each book includes an index.

Gr 3-5-- A new volume joins four revised series entries. Tecumseh traces the life of the great Shawnee chief. Apart from the encyclopedia and chapters in a few collective biographies, there is little material available for this age group on him. The book is illustrated with full-color period prints and paintings and should prove useful for reports. In the other titles, the amount of revision varies, although all are now illustrated with full-color and black-and-white photographs and/or reproductions. Statue has been completely rewritten. The original 1965 publication read more like a work of fiction and was illustrated with vague watercolors. The new edition is clearly organized and much more informative. It includes the restoration project carried out for the Statue's centennial. Gettysburg shows less extensive revision, but an awkward fictionalized set-up that was used to explain parts of the speech has been replaced by a straightforward presentation. The mention of battle casualties on one page may confuse readers; the impression given is that over 50,000 men died (instead of around 7,000). Neil Johnson's The Battle of Gettysburg (Four Winds, 1989) gives more extensive coverage, and includes the text of Lincoln's address, but does not describe its creation. Arizona and Assassination show only very minor changes in the text, although photographs now appear where there had been drab drawings. Purchase only if use and condition of the originals warrant it. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA (c) Copyright 2010.
