Gr. 3-6. ``I shall never do a man's work for less than a man's pay.'' Clara Barton, born in 1821, made this progressive declaration to the Massachusetts school board. An intelligent, ambitious young woman, fully aware of her skills, Clara successfully taught in even the roughest school districts. She quit teaching in the 1850s and later was employed in Washington, D.C., by the U.S. Patent Office. Sensing that civil war was imminent Barton exclaimed, ``I'm well and strong and young . . . if I can't be a soldier, I'll help soldiers.'' In an age when women were expected to remain at home Clara Barton wrote, ``I broke the shackles and went to the field.'' From August 1862 until the war's final battles in April 1865 Barton worked devotedly and heroically, earning the title ``Angel of the Battlefield.'' Kent continues his portrayal of Barton by telling of her determination to establish the Red Cross in America, which she did in 1882. Though the book's cover shows a Civil War scene, Canaday's two-color illustrations convey the vast scope of Barton's endeavors, complementing Kent's well-paced text. Fine treatment for this age level. PW. 361.7'634 (B) Barton, Clara / Nurses [CIP] 86-29899
