摘要
Opening with an interest-grabbing introduction, each biography brings out the character of the man -- his early life and its influence on his political aspirations, his election, important events (both good and bad) that occurred during his presidency, and life after his term in office (if applicable).

Gr 5-9 Each of these presidential biographies begins with an exciting episode from its subject's life: Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan; Eisenhower's role in D-Day; and Kennedy's famous PT-109 experience. Each president's life is capsulized, with quotes and humorous tidbits included. Important events of the period are included, and both Hargrove and Kent make mention of the many historic events and decisions that were part of each presidency. All three presidents are portrayed positively. With few exceptions, every two-page spread has at least one black-and-white photo; many have more. Photos are of reasonable quality and generally related to the text (one photo in the Truman book is captioned incorrectly, labeling Eisenhower as the outgoing rather than the incoming president). Print is large and clear, contributing to an attractive format. Writing is straightforward for the most part. However, Hargrove's transitions are often awkward and occasionally confusing, especially in the Truman volume. Overall, the content and approachable format make these volumes a welcome addition for libraries serving intermediate and middle-school students. Gr. 4-7. Moving up in time, this series (see Fitzgerald in Booklist 84:393 O 15 87) examines the sharply contrasting lives of three mid-twentieth-century men who became president. Hargrove profiles Truman, who gained a national reputation as an honest and worthy politician, as a senator not afraid to step on anyone's toes, and tells how, after the Missourian became president, Americans realized they had a surprisingly strong and intelligent leader, particularly in foreign policy. In his book on Eisenhower, Hargrove relates how the soldier's brilliant efforts in World War II, which made him a hero, enabled him to become president, his first job in politics. Following the conservative Ike came the liberal Kennedy, whose life is chronicled by Kent. He describes how Americans found themselves captivated by Kennedy's swift energy, charming style, and great personal courage. An abundance of illustrations adds support to the well-rounded texts, documenting the strengths and successes of each man as well as his difficulties and failures. A chronology of American history with the events during each president's lifetime is included. The spine of the Truman book lists Libbey rather than Hargrove as the author. PW.
