Gr. 3-5. Kent attempts to put the loss of the space shuttle Challenger and its seven-member crew into perspective for young readers. His simple, straightforward text briefly recounts the history of the space program and the circumstances of the previous tragedies of Apollo 1, Soyuz 1, and Soyuz 11. Although NASA's study of the Challenger explosion is not fully discussed, Kent provides biographical sketches of each crew member and highlights Christa McAuliffe's role as the first teacher in space. Accompanied by black-and-white photos, this addition to the series will help students put this contemporary event into historical focus.
