After 17 years, the Medical Library Association's venerable Hospital Library Management has been revised, updated, and expanded into what must be considered the new gold standard in health science librarianship textbooks. Holst, former assistant editor on the original volume and now director of library services, Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee, is ably assisted by Phillips (media services, Wayne State Univ., Detroit) and 19 chapter editors in creating a comprehensive resource for students, librarians in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, and those public and academic librarians who serve medical professionals. Individual chapters address the present healthcare environment; administration, space planning, marketing, finance, personnel, and quality improvement; technical services such as document delivery; and reference, information resources, collection development, access to services, audiovisuals, and health information for patients and consumers. A new section focuses on the issues unique to solo librarians. Each chapter includes a complete list of references and a bibliography of selected books, articles, and web sites for further information. For added value, more than 80 figuresÄtemplates, samples, formulas, and chartsÄmake the book not only a solid overview of the profession but a superlative hands-on guide for practitioners. Highly recommended for all healthcare librarians.ÄAnne C. Tomlin, Auburn Memorial Hosp. Lib., NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
