《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
Although John Grisham seems an unlikely candidate for a juvenile biography, the other three subjects have plenty of younger fans. They may be disappointed by these tepid biographies, however, which chart professional successes and never get beyond admiring press-kit insights into personal lives. Muddy black-and-white photographs illustrate the texts. Time lines are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 4^-8. Unlike many talk show hosts, Rosie O'Donnell has a strong following among kids. Her young fans will appreciate this look at her life, which took a sad turn with her mother's death when Rosie was 10. Kallen does not talk down to his audience, and this book in the People in the News series, is full of forthright information, including O'Donnell's acknowledgment that the adoptions of her children went much more quickly and smoothly because she was a star. There are also interesting sidebars that expand the book; for instance, information about the women of the All-American Women's Baseball League, upon whose experiences the movie A League of Their Own (starring O'Donnell and Madonna) was based. One disappointment, however, is the pictures. Though well chosen, many are dark and/or poorly reproduced. The text deserves better. Thoroughly sourced, the book also features a time line and bibliography. See the Series Roundup, this issue, for a biography of Jim Carrey. --Ilene Cooper
