This six-part documentary examines the evolution of the Auschwitz complex from a group of ramshackle Polish military training buildings into a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners and finally the ultimate killing factory for the Nazis' "Final Solution." While the history of Auschwitz is the central focus, the narratives from former inmates (Polish political prisoners, Jews, Gypsies, Soviet POWs, and Polish Jews forced to assist at the crematoria) and former SS members combine for a powerful contribution to Holocaust history. The heart-wrenching stories from inmates recount extreme brutality, while the SS staffers chillingly relate their conviction that the Jews were less than human and the many rationalizations used to excuse their actions. The two-disc set features historical footage and dramatizations based primarily on Nazi diaries, reports, etc., to re-create critical events. Bonus features include an interview with writer/ producer Rees and follow-up discussions hosted by Linda Ellerbee. Though some viewers may find the content and images disturbing, this is an essential purchase for Holocaust and World War II collections; highly recommended.-Karen A. Plummer, Univ. of Akron Lib.
