Focusing on four regions of the western United States, this book of photographs by Cook (working in black and white) and Jenshel (working in color) captures the stark beauty of a variety of volcanic phenomena. Approached artistically rather than scientifically, this work contains many striking photos as well as an introduction by Hawaiian poet Garrett Hongo (Volcano, LJ 3/1/95), who relates his personal experiences of living in a volcanic landscape. The book also includes clear maps, a glossary of terms, and an index of photos with descriptive text. Recommended for most public libraries and nature photography collections.Tim J.
