Gr 5-8From the inviting chapter titles ("Murder at Noon" and "Tell `Em to Come and Get Us") to the clearly reproduced black-and-white period photographs and engravings, this book provides a winning introduction to this infamous bandit. The opening chapter, describing a bank robbery, serves as an attention-grabber, with succeeding sections presenting not only a chronological biography but also an intriguing introduction to the complex nature of James as well as the period in which he lived. The author does not write down to his readers and the demanding vocabulary will present a challenge to intermediate students. However, James's story is presented so vividly that reluctant readers will struggle to continue through to the end. An appendix with an excellent map of robbery locations, a chronology, and a list for further reading add to the book's value.Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA (c) Copyright 2010. The eponymous volumes focus on individual figures; 'The Gunslingers' is a collective biography of Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, and other famous gunmen. Written to formula, the books present a sometimes superficial rendering of each subject's life, but they also contain an appreciation for the Wild West and the legends it fostered. The accompanying historical photographs contain a few gory elements. Chronologies are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
