摘要
John Grenham's Tracing Your Irish Ancestors is arguably the best book ever written on Irish genealogy. Not since Margaret Falley's Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research, written in the early 1960s, has there been a book that combines all the best features of a textbook and a reference book, expertly describing the various steps in the research process while at the same time providing an indispensable body of source materials for immediate use. Now, updated to reflect the enormous changes brought about by the Internet, the new Third Edition of Tracing Your Irish Ancestors marks another huge step forward in Irish genealogy. Most importantly, a chapter has been added that deals specifically with the Internet, while a new online subsection showing county Internet sources has been added to each of the county source lists and, where possible, references have been given throughout for any online versions of the records dealt with. Useful guides for researchers who need more specialized genealogy tools.

This guide is intended either for persons with little experience or those with a great deal. Three sections develop this, the first presenting the most basic sources (civil, census, church, and land records); then those with a narrower application (wills, Genealogical Office, emigration, Registry of Deeds, newspapers, directories); and finally a reference guide that lists sources for occupations, family histories, a county list covering census returns, local history, local journals, gravestone inscriptions, estate records, place names, and a final listing of societies, repositories, and research services. At the front of the book are small Catholic parish maps showing earliest record dates. For some uses (e.g., when places are known), other guides such as James G. Ryan's Irish Records (1988), which except for the introductory material is arranged by county, each with a map, will be convenient to consult as well. Some material is unique to each: Grenham's guide has a section on emigration while Ryan has helpful historical sketches. Unfortunately, Grenham provides no index. It is, however, a useful guide with much bibliographical information. V. L. Close; Dartmouth College
《图书馆杂志》(Library Journal )书评
Written by a professional Irish genealogist at the Genealogical Office in Dublin, this book is the product of more than a decade of professional research. It focuses on tracing ancestors in Ireland and, while designed for researchers at different levels of experience, its intent is to provide help even for the ``hard-bitten veteran.'' It is organized into three parts: Part 1 addresses the most basic genealogical sources (civil, census, church, and land records); Part 2 discusses more advanced tools (wills, emigration, deeds, newspapers, directories, and the Genealogical Office in Dublin); Part 3 offers a reference guide to a wide range of more fugitive resources (county source lists, printed family histories, church records, and research services, societies, and repositories). Revised editions could profit from more readable maps, more complete and current bibliographical references, an enlarged scope that includes Irish research in the United States and Canada, and a comprehensive bibliography of published sources. Still, the book provides a good beginning as a replacement for Margaret Dickson Falley's Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research (self-published, 1962). Grenham's book is by far the best work available on Irish genealogy and is essential for individuals and institutions researching the subject. For a comprehensive collection development article on genealogy, see the reviewer's ``Branching Out into Genealogy,'' LJ 11/1/92.--Ed.-- Judith P. Reid, Library of Congress (c) Copyright 2010.
