Dividing the first three years of a child's life into three-month intervals, Devine discusses how parents and other caregivers can encourage the development that takes place at each stage. The three-month intervals are not to be taken rigidly; each child should be allowed to develop at his or her appropriate pace. A great how-to text, this book recommends a wide variety of ways to interact (communicate) with a child from diapering to playing with a baby's toes. Some adults seem instinctively to know how to communicate with little ones. But even the pros can learn much from Devine, as she presents both new ideas for activities and the reasons--based in sound theory--for doing them. Highly recommended for any collection with an interest in children's care.-- John Moryl, Yeshiva Univ. Lib., New York (c) Copyright 2010.
