Educators healing racism

This book addresses the topic of racism from the teacher's perspective and proposes strategies for combating it through teacher education programs and in classrooms. It differs from the traditional way of addressing multicultural education and the strategies for teaching about other cultures. The authors deal directly with the problem of racism -- a topic that is both controversial and explosive. The intention of this book is not to assign blame to anyone, but to stimulate a dialogue among educational professionals about how the healing of racism can begin through teacher education programs and, as a result, through new classroom teachers. This book examines the social, political, and psychological perspectives of racism and enables the reader to better understand how racism has torn at the very fabric of society.

Quisenberry and McIntyre (Southern Illinois Univ.) have edited a fine set of readings that poses as its central question: who will have the courage to heal racism? The answer is that it must be the teachers and teacher educators, those who teach the next generation of teachers and their future students. The editors intend their text "to engender a dialogue among teacher professionals as to how the healing of racism can begin through teacher education programs, and as a result, in classrooms." The contributors examine historical perspectives, instructional perspectives, and social perspectives. Different themes are introduced and examined, e.g., racism in education; the history of racism; healing the wounds/instructional racism; dealing with racism in the classroom; issues in healing racism in teacher education; and the moral courage to heal racism in America. C. Pritchy Smith (Univ. of North Florida) best states the purpose of the book in his observation, "Our mission statements should express the moral imperative that we are not preparing teachers to teach in the world as it is, but we are preparing teachers to change that world."
