PreS-Gr 2-- ``Big kids, small kids, tiny kids, tall kids''--here is a happy-go-lucky field guide to today's child. Using a format similar to their What I Like (Putnam, 1991), this British team discloses the habits and secrets of kids both nasty and nice. Zippy verse moves readers right along, while the accompanying watercolor-and-ink drawings have a sprightly, endearing quality. Much of the book is comprised of portraits of youngsters in action, closeups of the impediments of childhood, and imaginative scenes. A few brown-skinned children add to the diversity of the group. The pleasure of this book, as in Richard Scarry's work, is in recognizing and naming the objects and emotions of daily life. Nifty. --Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, VA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

The latest picture book from the Anholts is a hodgepodge of musings on a very broad topic--kids. In a combination of question and answer and rhyming couplets directed at no one in particular, the text discourses on how kids behave, what kids look like, games they play and what they keep in their pockets, among other things. The ultimate effect is an aimless, lengthy laundry list. The book's sprightly design exudes some charm, with its gaggle of rollicking youngsters--though they all have similar features--engaged in characteristic activities, and with its large type that on a few spreads does some rollicking of its own. Most young readers will identify with at least some of the situations here, though the greater appeal is in the book's style, not its substance. Ages 3-up. (Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. The Anholts celebrate the experience of childhood with an honest, down-to-earth appreciation of their subject and a judicious flair for words, drawings, and book design. A rhyming patter of text and numerous busy scenes feature many activities and traits of young children. From HORN BOOK 1992, (c) Copyright 2010. In spritely verse and lively pen-and-watercolor illustrations, an exuberant survey of kids' diversity: ``Slow kids, quick kids, healthy kids, sick kids/Smooth kids, hairy kids, cute kids, scary kids.'' The contents of a typical pocket; a count-down of kids hiding (``...six in a box,/Five behind curtains, four behind clocks...''); what nasty kids are like (``They tell you lies, they spoil your games''), and nice ones (``They make you laugh, they hold your hand'')--with the same tots pictured for both; things kids make and do; fears, secrets, dreams, and wishes: an imaginative compilation with a dozen characters to follow from scene to scene and dozens of entertaining details to discover. (Picture book. 3-7)

Ages 3-5. As always, the Anholts show kids at play in all their variety. This book asks important questions (What's in a kid's pocket? What are kids' secrets? What are nasty kids like? What are nice kids like? What do kids make?) and answers each one with a double-page spread of small watercolor-and-ink pictures--clear, detailed, and full of character--and with a simple rhyming text that makes words fun. The monster page (What scares kids?) is bound to be the most popular ("A slithering snake and a slippery slug / A girl-eating ghoul and a boy-biting bug"), but just as fascinating is the long litany of practical verbs, each with its picture, describing what ordinary kids do: "Mix mess muddle comfort kiss cuddle. . . ." ~--Hazel Rochman
