摘要
摘要
The health of Native Americans is intimately tied to the health of the environment. Yet abuses of land, water, and air continue to compromise the health of native people and their land rights. This fascinating book explores this intimate relationship between people and the land, and environment and health. Here is an important message for health care providers, ecologists, and those who attempt to live their lives in harmony with the earth.

Indigenous peoples tend to have a unique worldview and relationship with their environment not readily understood by modern, Western populations. When the environment is polluted by industry, or if the land is confiscated, native populations suffer spiritually, culturally, and ultimately physically and mentally. Lambert Colomeda, an environmental educator descended from Native Americans, writes to fill a void in the health-care literature, particularly for nurses. She discusses environmental tragedies experienced by many different tribes or indigenous populations worldwide, particularly in North America, providing a brief history of the tribe, primary accounts of their past and current environmental concerns, and scientific information on pollutants and their health effects. These chapters provide an introduction to the topics, but one is left wanting more depth on individual tribes and their cultural/health/environmental link, and less material on so many different groups. Introductory and concluding chapters jump from topic to topic within sections, making it difficult to follow the line of thinking. The author works to integrate the nursing perspective, particularly nurse theorists, but once again the discussions require more depth. Since there is an extensive list of resources in the appendixes, the book could serve as an initial reference on the topic. Two-year technical program students. M. A. Thompson; Saint Joseph College
