摘要
Deftly retracing a pivotal chapter in one of America's most dramatic stories, Elliott West chronicles the struggles, triumphs and defeats of both Indians and whites as they pursued their clashing dreams of greatness in the heart of the continent.

Endorsed prior to its publication by such distinguished Western historians as Richard White, Robert Utley, and Patricia Nelson Limerick, The Contested Plains is that rare book that lives up to its advance notices. It is a superbly written account of the collision of cultures and a series of competing visions for the High Plains and the Colorado Front Range, which after 12,000 years of human occupation climaxed between the discovery of gold at Cherry Creek in 1858 and the final defeat of Tall Bull's Cheyenne Dog Soldiers on the South Platte in Nebraska on July 11, 1868. West, with unacknowledged (and unconscious?) debts to Walter Prescott Webb's The Great Plains (1900) and James C. Malin's The Grasslands of North America (1947), offers a provocative interpretation. A unique natural environment and climatic changes across millennia confronted successive waves of human occupants with opportunities to imagine new possibilities, transform their cultures in enacting what they imagined, and, in turn, press against the limits of nature. Bounding cultural responses and imagination are the quanta and types of energy that the resources of the High Plains provide. West's consideration of Native American adaptations to the Plains and of alternative possible outcomes once Indians and Anglo-Americans were pitted in rivalry is particularly penetrating. An epilogue, illustrations, and endnotes all too swiftly bring one to the end of an immensely satisfying and important narrative. All levels. D. W. Steeples Mercer University
