Excellent illustrations highlight this study of early Indian culture in the American Southwest. Translated from the German, the text offers an archaeological investigation of prehistoric civilization in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. The approach is thematic, with chapters concentrating on architecture, daily life, pottery, and social and religious traditions rounding out strictly historical discussions. In conclusion, the author considers the situation of native Americans still living in the area. List of parks, museums, and Indian sites in the region appended. Bibliography. ~--John Brosnahan
