In the field of postsecondary design education, the selection of clearly written and well-illustrated resource books is limited. Although the effectiveness of a textbook is determined by faculty, courses, and curriculum structure, the Gordons' edited book should find a fit in most situations. Reasonably priced, well researched, and in full color, the guide includes much of the computer vocabulary and programs. It also links the basic elements and principles of design and shows its application in the digital world. Many of the excellent examples will be new to US audiences, since they were selected by the Gordons, who teach in England. Their experience as teachers is one reason for the book's thoroughness and suitability as a course resource; another is its simple divisions. It is divided into four basic sections, each about 35 pages long and accompanied by an introduction, glossary, and bibliography. The book begins with "Design Basics" and concludes with more complex sections on type, color, and image. The pages are well laid-out and filled with informative captions, diagrams, and definitive subheadings. Although no book can be a complete guide, this one comes close to being a thorough guide and reference for both teacher and professional designer. Lower-division undergraduates through graduate students; professionals; two-year technical program students. D. Ichiyama Purdue University
