Gr 7 Up-Judiciary decisions take on a whole different meaning with Neanderthals on Trial, an outstanding video that proposes yet another look at the great debate that has waged on for years over whether or not man evolved from Neanderthals or if the latter was a totally separate species. This debate has gone back and forth through history with different scientists finding "proof" only to find it altered by other proof and findings. They have analyzed fossils, bones, and even the DNA of bones. Yet, questions persist about who the Neanderthals were and what happened to them. Expert testimony and interviews enhance video content. Real life footage, illustrations, and animated re-creations help tell the story of the Neanderthals over many thousands of years. For a long time, scientists considered Neanderthals to be beasts. After World War II and especially with the advent of the Civil Rights Movement, experts began to look at them differently based on cultural and sociological arguments. Scientists began to consider Neanderthals to be caring and more clan-like than was previously thought. Nevertheless, the opinions continue to bounce back and forth. This video, which offers and explains various theories and findings, would enhance both the science and social studies curriculums. The content is easy to follow and understand. The program offers excellent teacher and classroom support, and the Web site (www.pbs.org) provides a glossary, transcript, and resource links.-Barbara L.
