Gr 5-7 --These lavishly illustrated, information-packed books will be browsed through, taken home for reports, and perhaps even star in a booktalk or two. Sharks states that sharks are not as frightening as many believe, and describes them as hunters thatevolved to survive in the sea. The many orders of sharks and their unique physiology are described, including an excellent section on reproduction. A series of incredible photographs shows the birth of shark pups. Much of the text is devoted to the issue of shark attacks with interesting observations and statistics. Whales describes the baleen whales and one of the toothed whales, the sperm whale. The text defines the principle of scientific sorting and illustrates this concept with a very readable chart of the different groups. Although there are no pronunciation guides, clear and excellent definitions abound. Occasional attempts at humor are poor, but don't ruin the book (about anatomy: the flipper is like a human arm but with no elbow joint so that a whale cannot ``. . .put its elbow on the table''). Concepts are introduced that are fascinating but complex, and might be difficult for some readers, such as the section on the whales' circulation system. Both books are illustrated with a stunning collection of color photographs, charts, tables, and maps. --Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA (c) Copyright 2010. From the Great Creatures of the World series come two basic introductory volumes, both heavily illustrated with high-quality photographs and drawings. Whales discusses evolutionary history, the various suborders of Cetacea and how to identify them, along with anatomy, migratory patterns and humans' relationship to these mammals--a rather genocidal one, as the text points out. Sharks , designed in the same excellent format--with many photos and sidebars--at times leans toward nightmarish extremism, as 21-foot monsters roam the deep in search of human flesh. But for the most part, this book, too, is a careful, scientific overview of its subject--again introducing evolutionary history from ancient fossils to newly discovered species, and discussing habitat, sensory perceptions, reproductive habits, diet, etc. Ages 9-16. Gr. 5-8. Many books have been published on sharks and whales, but these two additions to the Great Creatures of the World series are exemplary. The oversize volumes, filled with varied and interesting color photographs and charts, also feature lots of well-organized information. Besides the standard data about habitat, eating habits, reproduction, etc., such interesting topics as legends, photographing sharks, and familial relationships are discussed. Both report seekers and browsers will request these. --Ilene Cooper
