Gr 5 Up Two fascinating topics, human evolution and settlement, illustrated in color with charts, photographs, and drawings, are introduced in these two surveys. In the often-used format of two pages per topic, The First People spans evolution from the birth of the sun through the beginnings of life on earth, moving right along to the dinosaurs, mammals, primates, and finally the different human species and their characteristics. In The First Settlements the transition of man from roaming hunter to settled farmer and city dweller is shown in glimpses of different types of settlements in many locales. The beginnings of a religious life are discussed. These books present the information in a colorful, attractive format, but some details are confusing (the word stratigraphy is introduced and not defined for eight pages), and often the illustrations portray males in active roles and females as audience. Each book includes sections on the science of archaeology to demonstrate how discoveries are made and studied. Frances E. Millhouser, Arlington County Department of Libraries, Va. (c) Copyright 2010.
