《书目》(Booklist)书评
An avid scuba diver and undersea naturalist introduces amateurs to the teeming life of the seven coastal regions of the continental U.S. He notes that, since the world's seas are contiguous, distribution of species is due to such factors as temperature, oxygen content, salinity, water depth, and habitat rather than terrain. The book's chapters accordingly discuss the life in similar ocean environments, e.g., deep water, sandy bottoms in temperate water, coral reefs in tropical seas, etc. Bulloch discusses diving, watching, and observing techniques and cautions about dangerous creatures in each environment, and he emphasizes respect for the environment as well as accurate field note taking. His coverage of sea life of all types makes this a quite comprehensive volume for the lay marine life observer-collector. ~--George Hampton

This general guide to the underwater world serves as a companion to, rather than a substitute for, the many excellent identification guides to fish, shells, etc. Bulloch ( The Wasted Ocean , LJ 4/1/89), writes about coastal marine life in a highly readable style and makes useful suggestions for observation even by snorkelers and vacationers at the beach. He also offers well-balanced information on both the East and West coasts of North America, and lists locations for whale watching, places to obtain field equipment, and contacts for participating in fish tagging. An effective way for the interested marine observer to delve into the world of coastal ecology; recommended for general collections.-- Susan Klimley, Columbia Univ. Libs. (c) Copyright 2010.
