摘要
摘要
This text introduces life span motor development for students with no background in the movement sciences. Coverage encompasses motor development through stages of physical growth, motor development and perceptual development, and physical fitness over the lifespan. This third edition has been expanded to present topics from a unifying model of constraints approach. New features to this edition include a margin glossary, reflection questions, and part summaries. Haywood and Getchell are affiliated with the University of Missouri-St. Louis. c. Book News Inc.

This update of a book on motor development includes more examples and applications of this science to practical settings, making this edition useful for a broader audience. The intent is to provide an understandable approach to conceptualizing the application of the science of motor control to clinical, classroom, and real-world settings. These aims are important to the development and progression of this area of research and for the future interests of would-be practitioners. The audience includes undergraduate or graduate students in the movement sciences, as well as physiotherapists and occupational therapists who come into contact with patients suffering from motor control dysfunctions and may benefit from the updated techniques and science. This edition includes many useful applications of this area of study for real-world settings. Figures and tables throughout the book help to clarify important learning objectives for each chapter subsection. This edition also includes a useful web-based study guide that assists readers in specific areas. This is a welcome update and retains the quality that characterized previous editions. It contains updated peer-reviewed evidence, but, perhaps equally important, includes contributions from the well-respected authors. This third edition of Life Span Motor Development, substantially rewritten since the second (1993) and with a larger format and new features, makes its information more accessible. Haywood and Getchell (both, Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis) have added important definitions in the margins and highlighted boxes that focus the reader on key points and questions. The authors take a theoretical perspective--dynamical systems--and attempt to follow it throughout the text. They focus on different forms of constraints: individual, task, and environmental. This aspect of dynamical systems is key and easily grasped by students. The years from infancy through adolescence remain the primary focus of this text; still wanting is a true life-span orientation that goes beyond merely a mention of the changes in motor behavior that occur through adulthood and aging. Unfortunately, the authors wait until the end to address applications of motor development; then, they devote merely five pages to it! This chapter, misplaced among others on physical fitness, fails to capture the importance of examining interactions among various factors. Although the final chapter detracts from its substance, this is an excellent text for all student levels and for professionals and practitioners in the field. K.
