摘要
Ron Howard has been in show business almost from the day he learned to talk. He rose to fame as young Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show and appeared in many movies and other T.V. shows while growing up. Later he drew even more fans in his role as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days, a show that continues to attract new audiences in syndication. Today, Howard has moved behind the camera to become a movie director and producer. With such Hollywood hits as Cocoon, Backdraft, Splash, and Apollo 13, and many other projects in the works, Howard has proved that life after child stardom can be just as successful. Barbara Kramer takes us behind the scenes and behind the camera to learn all about this well-loved child star and Hollywood director/producer.

Gr 5 Up-A workmanlike overview of the career of this actor and director. "Career" is the operative word here, since Howard began acting in the role of Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show when he was only six. This book follows him through his life as a child actor; his movie breakthrough in American Graffiti, which led to his role as Richie Cunningham on the long-lived television series Happy Days; and his transition from acting to a career as a highly respected film director. Kramer discusses each of his subject's movie projects, focusing on behind-the-scenes stories of the filming of each picture. Although his life and career are virtually inseparable, this biography gives no sense of him as a person. The only insight into Howard's character is that he is nice-a family man who keeps his kids out of the spotlight, but often on the set with him. The text is well documented, with extensive chapter notes providing references to back up each quotation. Black-and-white photographs show Howard primarily in professional poses either acting or on the job as a director.-Tim Wadham, Dallas Public Library, TX (c) Copyright 2010. With the exception of Hemingway, the subjects of these books have rarely been showcased in juvenile biographies, despite being individuals young people may know and find interesting. Although sometimes superficial, the adequately written volumes emphasize the talent, ambition, and work ethic that made the subjects win laurels and legions of fans. Illustrated with adequate black-and-white photographs, each book includes a chronology. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 7^-10. Teens may or may not remember Ron Howard as Opie on the Andy Griffith Show or as Richie on Happy Days but will likely recognize Howard as director of the popular film Apollo 13, which is where this engaging biography in the People to Know series begins. Readers will be fascinated and drawn in by Howard's challenges of filming and realistically depicting scenes in space. Kramer then traces Howard's rise from young actor to successful film director, through discussion of his television shows and films--successes and failures--and his personal life. Quotes and anecdotes from Howard and those he worked with as an actor and director, and photos of Howard at work on various sets, give readers further insight into the personal and professional journey of a determined, talented media artist. This well-written biography will not only appeal to fans of Howard's films but also inspire and educate those interested in filmmaking and the politics and business of twentieth-century Hollywood.
