Hollywood seems to have a big influence on the DVD documentary market these days. Following the release of Troy, starring Brad Pitt, the BBC recently released Michael Wood's 1985 In Search of the Trojan War on DVD. And now comes this History Channel collection. Presumably because Homer tells us that Menelaus, the King of Sparta, was the husband of the famed Helen, we get the three-hour-long Rise and Fall of the Spartans. This excellent look at that celebrated state, well deserving of a release in its own right, chronicles Spartan highs, the deathless heroism of Thermopylae, Sparta's ugly and dictatorial side, its defeat by Thebes at Leuctra, and its eventual fall. Good stuff, but we learn nothing whatsoever about Troy or the Trojans. An Ancient Mysteries episode narrated by Leonard Nimoy called "The Odyssey of Troy" runs less than an hour but is a good general introduction. An episode of InSearch of History called "The Trojan City" is basically the same documentary as "Odyssey" but with a different narrator. Finally, a segment of a show called Treasure! follows the peregrinations of the collection of gold jewelry found at the site of the city, jewelry that had nothing whatsoever to do with the Trojan War or anyone connected with it. For an outstanding documentary on the subject, get Wood's In Search of the Trojan War. This collection might be worth acquiring for the episode on Sparta. Otherwise, pass on Troy: Unearthing the Legend.--Christopher Johnson, Webster Groves P.L., MO (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
