This is the third volume of reprinted essays on Homer edited by Bloom and published by Chelsea House. The Homer title appeared in 1986, that on the Iliad the next year (CH, Dec '87). The present volume consists of essays by H.D.F. Kitto, Agathe Thornton, C.M. Bowra, Norman Austin, Helene P. Foley, Jenny Strauss Clay, and Charles Segal. All are interesting and thought-provoking. Unfortunately, footnotes have been omitted, and the works of cited authorities usually are not given in the appended bibliography. A chronology of events from c. 4000 to c. 750-650 BCE, which the Iliad volume also contains, seems here of very little relevance. There is an index of proper names.
