This one-sided study of mother-daughter relations, intended to help daughters uncover their ``mother-wounds,'' is based on the premise that mothers are the chief cause of their daughters' problems. University of Colorado psychology professor and psychotherapist Bassoff ( Mothers and Daughters ) draws on examples from her own experiences and those of patients, and from literature and myths of daughters dominated, overprotected, ignored or rejected by their mothers. Except for warnings against sexual abuse, fathers and their impact on daughters are only briefly mentioned. However emotionally deprived they may be, daughters, the author maintains in a self-help guide that states the obvious, can learn to nurture or ``mother'' themselves through positive relationships with others, contact with nature and creative activity of various kinds. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Appealing to the growing interest in the long-term effects of the parent-child relationship, Bassoff discusses how mothers influence their children in positive and negative ways from birth on into adulthood, focusing in particular on how negative experiences manifest themselves in adult daughters. Unlike many other books on the subject, however, Bassoff's doesn't simply dwell on recognizing how mothers can impede their children's maturation, but also considers the healing process that will help the adult child come to terms with her past and realize her own potential as a human being. Writing a remarkably sensitive book as well as a sensible one, Bassoff draws on her own life and on case studies to illustrate the various problems as well as possible solutions to this mother-daughter dilemma. Recommended for psychology and self-help collections. Notes, bibliography; to be indexed. ~--Jill Sidoti
