Through the voices of quilters, writers, and folklorists, this book explores the images and meanings of Winnebago ribbon quilts, Plains Indian star designs, Yuwupi giveaway quilts, Hawaiian appliqued quilts, the seal party quilts of the Nelson Island Eskimos, and many more. Essays on contemporary and historical quilting traditions from around the country and rare historical photographs highlight this lavishly illustrated volume.

Creating and using quilts are a significant cultural tradition for Native North Americans and Hawaiians, yet this aspect of contemporary Native culture has generally been ignored because the materials and techniques were introduced by Euramericans. MacDowell, Dewhurst, and other authors explore many facets of quilting in communities as diverse as Native Hawaiian, Lakota, Hopi, Mohawk, and Eskimo. The history of quiltmaking, the uses of quilts, many quiltmakers, and a number of quilting groups are discussed. In addition, the book profiles three Native quiltmakers. The book grew out of a project by the Michigan State University Museum to collect and record examples of Native quilts, and those quilts form the basis for the numerous full-color illustrations. The pictures emphasize the artistry of the quilts, while the text, especially the chapters written by people about their own communities, provides a great many details about contemporary Native life. Unfortunately, the book is marred by a number of glaring errors, such as mislocating Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, in South Dakota, and referring to the Calico Country Quilt Guild of Fort Berthold Reservation rather than the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation. This lavishly illustrated collection of essays on Native American and Hawaiian quilters and quilting had its beginnings in an exhibit of the same name held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian and touring through the year 2001. Until recently, the study of native quilting traditions was largely ignored by ethnographers, who concentrated their attention on aspects of Native American culture thought to be less influenced by contact with European culture. It is only in recent decades that quilting has been recognized as an important part of Native American and Hawaiian cultures. Photographs of 180 quilts along with 96 fascinating documentary photographs are included. Highly recommended for academic and large public library collections. (c) Copyright 2010.
