《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
Illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs, the easy-to-read biographies of four contemporary athletes are written to formula, beginning with a brief discussion identifying the subject's accomplishments and proceeding with short chapters dealing with early life, family, and the long road to success. Reluctant readers may enjoy the books, but more information and more interesting reading can be found elsewhere. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. Gr. 4-8. The slim biographies of the Sports Headliners series open with a dramatic moment in each subject's career: Robinson's 40-foot game-winning shot for Navy in a 1987 game against Duke; Joyner-Kersee's 1986 heptathlon world record at the Goodwill Games. Then the books go on to spotlight significant events in the athletes' career. The authors' brisk, easily read texts make use of play-by-play action and quotes from the sports press. The masthead design for each chapter opening and a variety of color and black-and-white photographs contribute to the "headliner's" theme. ~--Linda Ward Callaghan
