摘要
Recounting the exciting adventures of Pony Express Rider, scout, hunter, showman, Buffalo Bill Cody, an American hero. When he was only fourteen, Bill made a name for himself as a fearless rider for the Pony Express. Buffalo Bill earned his famous nickname when he was hired by the railroad to hunt buffalo. In his Wild West show, Cody brought the real Wild West to audiences throughout the United States and Europe.

Gr 4-6The authors have made a concerted effort to give well-rounded and objective portraits of these legendary heroes, drawing on primary sources (such as the subjects' autobiographies) and often separating fact from fiction in a somewhat humorous toneespecially in the case of Davy Crockett, who apparently was something of a comedian himself. Well-captioned, black-and-white reproductions of paintings, photographs, drawings, and maps illustrate the texts, so it's disappointing that the cover art, though colorful, is unrealistic, almost cartoonlike. These easy-reading biographies are good introductions to the subjects' lives, but their length renders them less useful for in-depth reports.Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX (c) Copyright 2010. The brief biographies, written in short, easy-to-read sentences, outline the lives of six adventurous individuals who shaped the Wild West during the second half of the nineteenth century. Black-and-white photographs and drawings add intereest; the lurid cover illustrations, however, make the volumes visually unappealing. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. Gr. 4^-6. Short biographies of colorful historical figures are always in need, and it would be hard to come up with more dramatic subjects than the rompin' stompin' Wild West heroes introduced in the Legendary Heroes of the Wild West series. Sanford and Green have done a creditable job of sorting fact from tall tale, particularly difficult in the case of Calamity Jane, who "seldom let the truth interfere with a good story." Although much of Buffalo Bill's life no longer seems laudable (his slaughtering quantities of buffalo and killing Indians, for example), the authors have avoided presenting him through a modern-day filter. Sentences are short and choppy, and the action sometimes leaps around. However, the research is obvious, and the overall quality is acceptable. Crisp black-and-white photographs add interest, and a glossary and sketchy bibliography are included. See the Series Roundup in this issue for other titles. --Susan Dove Lempke
