Despite the plethora of books published on van Gogh, there can never be enough. Scholars are continually bringing new insights to his work and life, and increasingly improved reproduction techniques enhance our vicarious enjoyment, appreciation, and knowledge of his paintings and drawings. Such is the case with this catalog for the exhibition of 70 paintings from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, first shown at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, and traveling to the Los Angeles County Museum. The 89 color plates are beautiful, brilliant, and exhilarating, and the 44 black-and-white images enhance the text and amplify the total presentation. All phases of van Gogh's career are considered. There are two essays: a relatively short history of the Museum's collection by its director, John Leighton; and a 120-page essay by van Gogh scholar Richard Kendall, "Evangelism by Other Means: Van Gogh as a Painter." The texts are amplified by a short biography, a checklist, a select bibliography, and an index of paintings in the exhibition. Well produced, securely bound, and very reasonably priced, this exhibition catalog is recommended for all levels and collections of modern art. General readers; undergraduates through faculty. J.
