摘要
Bold strokes and colors swirling off the page distinguish the style of Vincent Van Gogh. He was a passionate and tormented man -- a fact that is reflected in his paintings. Follow Vincent Van Gogh through the roller coaster of his life, and watch his paintings change with his state of mind. Meet Van Gogh's beloved brother, Theo, and his good friends and fellow artists Paul Gauguin, Emile Bernard, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Visit Aries in the south of France, where Van Gogh lived and worked. Enjoy his story through entertaining narrative, colorful pictures and photos, illustrations, maps, and more.

Gr 4-6These series entries look at the lives and work of two very different men. Both accounts are brief and straightforward. The artists' biographies are examined in the context of the time in which they lived, and their work is compared to that of their contemporaries. Full-color illustrations and reproductions of paintings are clear and well chosen. Black-and-white photographs and reproductions of sketches are included as well. Captions point out the things that make each work specialline, color, brushstrokes. Short glossaries define terms, but no bibliographies are provided. Useful additions, though not as complete as the "Eyewitness Art" books.Susan Chmurynsky, East Kentwood Freshman Campus, MI (c) Copyright 2010. Twelve two-page chapters introduce each artist's life and work. The oversized books are illustrated with clear reproductions of artwork and photographs. However, the texts are choppy and contain distracting typographical errors. Some section titles, pictures, and captions are unrelated to the pages on which they appear. Glos., ind. Kirkus评论
This entry in the Art for Young People biography series focuses on the artist's life and immediate surroundings rather than on analyzing his work. Harrison chronicles van Gogh's life from birth, through his intensely religious phase and his discovery of the work that was to be his lifelong pursuit. Throughout his life, van Gogh maintained a close relationship with his brother, Theo, despite the former's increasingly difficult behavior. Briefly mentioned are van Gogh's ear mutilation and his eventual suicide. Though not of high quality, many small reproductions of van Gogh's work are scattered throughout the text; they include some of his lesser-known works, which provide fresh insight into his story. Muhlberger's What Makes a Van Gogh a Van Gogh? (1993) and Loumaye's Van Gogh: A Touch of Yellow (1993) have superior reproductions and fuller details about both van Gogh and his paintings, but are for a slightly older audience.
