In Patent's typically creative and thoughtful presentation, the annual gathering of bald eagles in Glacier National Park provides entree to: 1) the problem of saving an endangered species from extinction; 2) the difficulty of following birds' movements, and how it's overcome; 3) the eagles' actual traits and habits; 4) the means of keeping up the salmon population on which they feed; 5) ongoing dangers to the eagles (including the notion of birds being ""bad"" or ""good""). Children will be most interested in learning how the bald eagles are tracked--via tags or attached radio transmitters; in seeing how individual birds are trapped, examined, and tagged or radio-equipped at Glacier Park; and in learning, from the pinpoint photo-documentation, that they aren't hurt in the process. Patent is forthright and concrete about the present state of the bald eagle population, and today's threats (deforestation, poisons, feather-merchants, misguided ranchers); she also supplies a little national-bird lore. It's absorbing and, in the best sense, educational, Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
