Gr 1-3This introduction to the Earth briefly introduces volcanoes, earthquakes, and other geological features. In numbered steps and informal language, the main text describes the basic progression of the eruption of a geyser, the approach of a tsunami, and other earthshaking events. Additional related facts appear in boxes and sidebars; sometimes they are arranged sequentially, as when words and pictures describe the movement of the earth's plates; others contain random facts, making the numbered sequence unnecessary and a bit confusing. Text and illustrations emphasize sensational aspects, sometimes to a misleading degree. The only picture of an earthquake, for example, depicts a truck driving into a 10-foot-wide rift in the ground; more common damages are only briefly mentioned. Four pages on volcanoes fail to mention that not all of them are active. Several true-or-false questions run along the sides of the pages, with answers provided in the back. The writing is enthusiastic and conversational, and may attract some reluctant readers. There are many clearer, more informative choices on the topic, however, including Gail Gibbons's Planet Earth, Inside Out (Morrow, 1995), or, even better, individual titles in the "Let's Read and Find Out" series (HarperCollins), and Seymour Simon's excellent series, including Mountains (1994) and Earthquakes (1995, both Morrow).Steven Engelfried, West Linn Public Library, OR (c) Copyright 2010. Generalized descriptions of weather, geological processes, and their effects on humans around the world are presented in numbered paragraphs (numbers that are unnecessary in terms of the text, but helpful in navigating through the busy layouts). 'Quiz' questions that accompany each spread reduce complex phenomena to true/false statements. The color illustrations vary in quality. Ind. From HORN BOOK 1997, (c) Copyright 2010.
