K-Gr 2-During the course of a day, two wildlife hunters aim and shoot repeatedly at howler monkeys, a jaguar, frogs, an anaconda, a sloth, and so on. It is not until the end of the book that readers see that they are shooting with cameras-these people are photographers. The text is rhythmic in both English and Spanish, giving a factually accurate description of a particular niche in this disappearing habitat. Both text and pictures are bordered, with the bright, detailed watercolor illustrations both reinforcing and augmenting the text. Embedded facts make this a solid introduction to the rain forest and the dwellers therein. A brief "glossary" is simply a listing of words in English and Spanish, with no pronunciation guides. Used in conjunction with Lynne Cherry's The Great Kapok Tree (Gulliver, 1990), this book provides an introduction to the life on the banks of the great river and the need to preserve it. Two wildlife hunters (revealed at the end to be photographers) travel along the Amazon observing and being observed by the wildlife. This plotless tale describes scenes of animal life at different times of the day. Neither the repetitive bilingual text nor the sometimes blurry and indistinct illustrations are particularly effective. From HORN BOOK Spring 2004, (c) Copyright 2010.
