A timely and significant contribution to the important dialogue currently surrounding natural resource management policies. It directly addresses one of the most critical issues facing our public lands, namely, the protection of natural systems and ecological integrity versus conflicting human utilitarian interests. A number of experts present their views on the natural processes and conflicting political and economic issues related to the greater Yellowstone region. Three key resource management policies impacting the Yellowstone ecosystem are the focuses of major sections in the book. These include natural fire policy, wildlife management strategies for elk and bison, and the reintroduction of wolves. The fundamental interaction of public values and the movement toward ecosystem-based management presented should be of major interest to all who visit and enjoy US national forests and parks. The book is well written, with numerous references following each chapter. Strongly recommended for public library patrons and should be required reading for all college students in any of the natural resource disciplines.-M. J. Zwolinski, University of Arizona
