This is the second edition of a comprehensive laboratory textbook of clinical immunology and serology. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference for laboratory evaluations of immunological diseases and serological tests. This edition expands on the first one by including new information, additional illustrations, and case studies for each subject matter. This book would be very useful for clinical laboratory scientists (CLS) in training or early in their practicing career. This book would also be very helpful as the course textbook for anyone teaching CLS students or for those performing such testing in their everyday practice (e.g., CLSs, pathologists, laboratory medicine residents, internal medicine practitioners). This one-inch thick paperback book has 23 chapters. The first six cover the theoretical basis of immunology, followed by five chapters discussing basic laboratory test methodologies for immunological disorders or serology, another six chapters on specific immunologic disorders, and finally five chapters on commonly performed serological tests. I spent some time on the chapters on immunological disorders because this field is so rapidly evolving. The descriptions of various diseases are concise yet complete, and nicely complemented with discussions of the corresponding available tests. Of note, the old "LE prep" test, a nonspecific test historically used as an adjunct for diagnosing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is not even mentioned - one of many examples that this book accurately reflects current and best laboratory practice! Many of the chapters are followed by an "Exercise" for the interested reader, followed by review questions that nicely capture the key learning points. This book is an excellent reference for anyone learning or practicing clinical immunology or serology, based on its emphasis on evidence-based good laboratory practice. This is a really nice reference to have handy in a clinical immunology or serology lab, and is a MUST for any CLS training program -- students and instructors alike. Valerie L.
