An excellent picture of the workings of plate tectonics. Aylesworth begins with the evolution of the theory from the 17th century when Francis Bacon noted that the continents seemed to match like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, through the seminal work of Germany's Alfred Wegener in the early 1900s, and the numerous earth scientists of the past three decades who have revolutionized geologic theory. He clearly and concisely gives readers an understanding of how the crustal movements of the plates affect mountain building, volcanoes, earthquakes, and other dynamic forces. One of the few better sources for understanding the subject was a recent PBS special that may be in some media collections, but this text is in the front rank of print sources. Unfortunately, the black-and-white photos and charts are not well reproduced. They're too dark and muddy and do not help readers understand the surface evidence of these forces. Still, this is an excellent source for reports or for general science readers. --Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Photographs. A solid discussion of plate tectonics and its connection with earthquakes, volcanoes, and historical geography. The ending stresses the tentative nature of scientific knowledge. Unclear, uninteresting photographs and a flat style. Bibliography, index. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Gr. 5-8. Aylesworth relates how the theory of plate tectonics developed into a coherent explanation of the planet's structure, accounting for such phenomena as earthquakes, volcanoes, and continental drift. The text is clear and well organized, but more and better quality graphics are needed; there are several places where a well-thought out illustration or chart could clarify textual material. Many of the black-and-white photographs are poorly reproduced, and some of the pictures are too tersely captioned. On the plus side, Aylesworth carefully includes in a final chapter respected scientific opinion that dissents with the continental drift (but not plate tectonic) theory. A glossary and a list of further reading are appended. This will be useful where earth science is a part of the curriculum; the information is good, even if the packaging is mediocre. --Denise Wilms
