PreS-Gr 3Using animation, this the story of how Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first airplane. A fascination for flight led these two young boys to explore concepts that allowed two bicycle repairmen to build airplanes. In addition to providing information on how they developed their plane and the key discovery of twisting wings, the video includes lessons on values and personal characteristics. The Wright brothers used perseverance and caution that led to their success in the competition to build the first plane. This characterization is developed well in the video. The animated caricatures are not as well presented as the narration, which is clear and entertaining. Background music reflects the piano music of the timelively and cheerful. Location and time labels help to make clear what was happening in both France and the U.S. in the competition to be the first to fly. A delightful bonus is the live-action films of the plane in flight. Some viewers will find the many failed attempts at flight (crashes) humorous, others sad. Primary students will enjoy this story and be entertained as they learn about personal values, the struggles of inventors, and the history of the development of the first airplane. Although this series was designed for the home audience, it also will be useful in the school curriculum.-Ann Elders, Mark Twain Elementary School, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2010.
