Gr. 9-12. Continuing the high quality of the Opposing Viewpoints series, this volume presents a wealth of information about human sexuality in a succinct and readable format. The book is divided into five chapters ("What Is the Purpose of Sex?" "What Sexual Norms Should Society Uphold?" "How Are Gender and Sexual Orientation Determined?" "What Constitutes Normal Behavior?" and "How Is Society's View of Human Sexuality Changing?" ), each including five to eight articles presenting a variety of viewpoints and a bibliography of periodical sources. A selection of chapter-keyed questions useful for classroom discussion, a list of contact organizations, and a bibliography of books round out the text. The volume's only shortcoming is occasionally vague citations of contributors' credentials. (Reviewed Sept. 15, 1995)1565102460Merri Monks

This collection of articles on sexual topics provides readers with opposing views written by advocates of those positions. The intention is to show the reasoning behind other people's convictions on sensitive topics. There are several viewpoints in each of five chapters: What is the purpose of sex? What sexual norms should society uphold? How are gender and sexual orientation determined? What constitutes normal sexual behavior? How is society's view of human sexuality changing? The way each writer supports his/her viewpoint varies, with some using considerable scientific data, and others value judgments based on a moral/ethical system. There are a few others, particularly those dealing with homosexuality, that are recitations of prejudices. Most papers go head to head with the others in the chapter; i.e., "Prostitution Can Benefit Women" vs. "Prostitution Harms Women"; "The Purpose of Sex Is Reproduction" vs. "The Purpose of Sex Is Sensuous Pleasure." At the end of each chapter is a bibliography of supplementary articles on those topics. A similar, more useful work is the series edited by Robert T. Francoeur, Taking Sides (1987- ).
