《书目》(Booklist)书评
Easton, the son-in-law of the legendary Max Brand, began writing western fiction of his own in the early 1940s. This volume brings together in book form several of his short stories--many involving the same characters--originally published in such magazines as Atlantic Monthly, Argosy, Collier's, and Esquire. Easton refers to the stories as a prelude to his continuing saga of California, which has so far encompassed four novels, with a fifth, Love and Destiny, on the way. The title story here is about a young man's first ranch job and comes across as highly autobiographical. Another, "Quick and the Cat," is the tale of a bounty hunter who finds himself in trouble with a bear whose cubs he's killed. The collection as a whole offers entertaining mainstream western fare and delivers memorable insights into an almost forgotten way of life. --Budd Arthur
