Gr 3-5Gunfighters discusses well-known gunslingers such as Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers; outlaws Clay Allison, John King Fisher, and Billy the Kid; and gangs such as the Jameses, Daltons, and the Wild Bunch. These historical figures are dealt with in a cursory fashion; the book only serves as a bare-bones introduction to the topic. Pioneering Women is similar in format, and focuses on the struggles and challenges of women on the frontier. Some famous individuals, such as Calamity Jane and Carrie Nation, are briefly mentioned. A preferable choice on this subject is Brandon Marie Miller's Buffalo Gals (Lerner, 1995). Scouts is the weakest of the three titles. Its organization is confusing, as chapter one begins with a fictionalized encounter between Kit Carson and two grizzly bears, and then leaves off any further discussion of the scout until chapter five. Additionally, several people pictured and introduced in captions are not discussed in the text. All three volumes have black-and-white photographs and reproductions.Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Six slim volumes contain some history but are composed mostly of brief biographical sketches of famous and not-so-famous western figures. The books strive to include subjects from a variety of cultural backgrounds, but the information is skimpy and the presentation formulaic. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and reproductions, the books have strikingly tacky covers. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010.
