Gr 7 Up-- Combining both topical and chronological approaches to American history, these well-illustrated volumes present a sampling of primary pictorial sources. Each title contains a general as well as a specific timeline of events beginning with early explorations in the colonial period and continuing through the post-Civil War era. Discussions of personalities and events are limited to double-page spreads illuminated with period paintings, prints, and photo: graphs from several Library of Congress collections. Bridging the Continent includes the major western trails, inland and ocean waterways, and early railroads. Exploring the Frontier focuses on early European explorers, American frontiersmen and mountain men in addition to government-sponsored explorations led by Lewis and Clark, the Corps of Topographical Engineers, and the great surveying projects of the 1870s. Thorough indexing makes these books useful to social studies and art history students. Strangely enough, these highly visual titles do not include maps that indicate the territories and trails; therefore, concurrent use of a textbook and/or historical atlas is advised. --Nancy E.
