摘要
摘要
Collected here for the first time ever are the surviving eyewitness accounts of the Bozeman's Trail's civilian emigrants: twenty-four diaries written during the journey and nine reminiscences prepared afterward. These accounts describe life on the West's last great emigrant trail, the shortcut from the Platte River Road to the Montana goldfields, from 1863 until 1866, when the route was closed by "Red Cloud's War." Ample introductions, extensive annotation, historical illustrations, and detailed maps enrich this oversized, two-volume compendium.

The Bozeman Trail was the last of the western overland gold rush era trails. It began as a cutoff in 1863 from the main Oregon Trail in central Wyoming, running northerly and skirting around the Bighorn Mountains to the Yellowstone River and then west to the goldfields of Virginia City and Bannack in southern Montana. Though comparatively few sojourners used the trail between 1863 and 1866 (some 3,500 all told), its location through prime Sioux hunting country flagrantly violated earlier US treaties and sparked Native American unrest in the region, which ultimately culminated in the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 and the dispossession of Native peoples throughout the region. These two handsome volumes contain nearly every possible scrap of information culled from over a decade of research by the author (an independent historian), including 33 extant diaries and reminiscences. Each possesses significant editorial exegesis. Notable contextualizing material by western historians, maps of every segment of the serpentine trail at various chronological stages, a glossary, calendars, numerous illustrations, and an extensive bibliography accompany the volumes. Recommended for libraries specializing in western American history at all levels. K. Edgerton Montana State University at Billings
