摘要
"Bradford Stone, mapmaker and artist, comes to Bent's Fort on the Arkansas in 1845 to join John C. Fremont's Third Expedition, but in particular to meet and work with the man who has been his hero all his life, Christopher Houston Carson - Kit - the greatest mountain man, guide, and Indian fighter." "The long-anticipated meeting almost turns out disastrously for young Stone, but he and Carson become fast friends, fighting and exploring together in the great West in one of the most turbulent periods of American history. Stone struggles to unravel the apparent contradictions in his friend Carson, who is generous in the extreme even to his enemies, but who blindly follows his superior's orders. But after a year of sharing perils, triumphs, losses, and tragedies, the celebrated scout remains an enigma even to the perceptive, sensitive Stone." "The young artist meets and falls in love with darkly beautiful Ana Barragan, cousin of Carson's wife, and contends for her love with her pathologically proud father, Don Bernardo, and with her gentle suitor, Santa Fe trader Luis Aragon." "In this enormously rich, tumultuous tale of love and conquest, Zollinger tells how in three short years a third of the country's land mass was added to the maps that Fremont and Stone made and left as their legacy."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Tenderfoot cartographer Bradford Stone rides with Kit Carson and John C. Fremont on the greatest adventure of westward expansion: Fremont's 1845 expedition from Colorado to California. Although Caron is Brad's idol, the two men develop a warm friendship as the famous scout teaches the greenhorn how to survive on the frontier. Fremont, brilliant, pompous, secretive and ambitious, proves to be less approachable. Indeed, once Brad and the other expeditioners arrive in California, they realize that Fremont has more on his mind than just mapping a few trails. Mexico and the U. S. are edging close to war, and Fremont intends to seize California as spoils. Brad witnesses Fremont's campaign of deception, skulduggery and bluff, confounding Mexicans and Americans alike. While Brad gets his political education from Fremont and his battlefield skills from Carson, his heart belongs to the beautiful Ana Barragan, the only daughter of a Yanqui-hating Mexican landowner; but their illicit love affair looks doomed from the start. Zollinger's seventh novel (after Chapultepec) is a richly detailed and colorful tapestry of history, adventure, discovery, romance and suspense. (June) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Captain John C. Frâmont's 1845 topographical expedition to California and the US war with Mexico serve as the backdrops for an engaging tale of a young America's westering imperatives. Soon after joining the force gathering along the Arkansas River for Frâmont's third trek west of the 100th meridian, Bradford Stone, a young Harvard grad with mapmaking skills and artistic gifts, is befriended by Kit Carson, his boyhood idol. Before their journey starts, the legendary trapper takes him home to Taos, where he meets and falls in love with Ana BarragÊn, the spirited daughter of a local grandee. Though promised to Luis Aragon, a new amigo of Brad's, she reciprocates his ardor, and he unwittingly leaves lovely Aha great with child. On the trail with Carson and Frâmont, the greenhorn proves his mettle in deadly clashes with marauding Indians. After much adventure and hardship, the half-starved explorers reach California, which is awash in rumors that the US and Mexico are at war. Under the command of Frâmont, Brad participates in the Bear Flag Rebellion and other comic-opera campaigns. Sent back east with dispatches after more than a year in the wilderness, he learns his beloved Aha (who was hastily married off to Luis) has died in mysterious circumstances along with her infant son. Although heartbroken, he accepts a post as aide to the military governor of New Mexico. Brad also renews acquaintance with Luis and, at the risk of his life, rides hell for leather out of Santa Fe to warn Taos of an upcoming revolt. He plays a role in suppressing this bloody insurrection and has a final confrontation with Don Bernardo BarragÊn, one its leaders. Zollinger (Chapultepec, 1995, etc.) brings his characters--especially the estimable Carson and charismatic Frâmont--to vivid life in a historical setting suffused in violence and romance. A fine tale of Americans along their way toward manifest destiny. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
