Gr 1-3-This third book about the famous sisters is just as funny and original as the other two. The Gollys, a singing, dancing team, travel all over the West in their covered wagon, entertaining the residents of different towns. Truesdell's bright watercolors depict the silly duo as they try to rid themselves of a bad-luck goat in the audience, journey to see a magic talking rock, and have other adventures. The easy-to-read stories are great fun and will involve children, but there is also a warmth and feeling of love between these siblings that permeates the book. When May-May and Rose hide together under their bed, sing so they won't hear the thunder, and close their eyes so they can't see the lightning, readers get a glimpse into their special, close relationship.-Jan Shepherd Ross, Dixie Elementary Magnet School, Lexington, KY (c) Copyright 2010. The Golly sisters, who entertain throughout the Old West as they travel in their horse-drawn covered wagon, surface for a third time in these laugh-provoking adventures. Five stories explore the sisters' ability to compromise, their fear of thunderstorms, and their irrepressible singing-and-dancing spirit. Truesdell's humorous watercolors perfectly complement the zany quality of Byars's text. From HORN BOOK 1994, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 1-3. May-May and Rose, the Golly sisters, are back in a third collection of lively "old West" yarns for beginning readers to enjoy. This time their traveling show is disrupted by a goat. They also discover a talking rock, fight over a script, dive under their covered wagon's bed to sing away their fear of a thunderstorm, and cavort in a field for a little "vacation." The sisters have lots of personality, the vocabulary is generally right on target, and the episodes move along smartly, abetted by Truesdell's great color illustrations, which capture the spry, feisty duo in all their melodramatic posturing and comedy. Lots of fun. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
