Gr 1-3Beginning readers will enjoy this this oral presentation of this "I Can Read" book by Betsy Byars (HarperCollins, 1990). Children will quickly identify with May-May and Rose as they "cross the big river" and prepare their zany variety shows. May-May's magic act using pigs instead of rabbits quickly becomes a disappearing act when the audience realizes all the secret tricks. In their swamp adventure, discover who lives therea creature which is long and swiggly. The dramatic reading by D. J. Critt intensifies each story. The episodes, which are appropriately dramatized and emphatically interpreted by Critt, elicit a variety of emotionsanger, frustration, fear, humor, wonder. The reading is slow enough that young children will understand the story theme and visualize the action; it is not so slow that youngsters will become impatient with the interpretation. What a wonderful introduction to the writings of Betsy Byars! Very young children may start the reading journey with the collection of novelettes featuring the Golly Sisters, stop to enjoy McMummy and then, as young adults, complete the reading experience with Pinballs, The Summer of the Swans, and other novels. School libraries should consider the addition of this book/cassette to their collectionsthey won't be disappointed.Patricia Mahoney Brown, Franklin Elementary School, Kenmore, NY (c) Copyright 2010. The wacky actresses of the frontier, May-May and Rose, participate in five action-packed adventures in this sequel to 'The Golly Sisters Go West' (Harper). Kirkus评论
The self-reliant pair has several more adventures while pursuing their careers as vaudeville entertainers on the American frontier. The events may be a bit tame, but Byars recounts them with engaging wit and pungent precision--and Truesdell's zany characterizations and lively humor almost steal the show. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 1-3. These five amusing stories about the daring female duo who first appeared in The Golly Sisters Go West (Harper, 1986) pack punch lines, feature zesty artwork, and show strength in character, plot, and style. As before, the women have horse trouble (it nearly drowns them) and get lost (this time in a swamp) as they face the challenges of pioneer life, both in their covered wagon and in their stage careers. For example, feeling unappreciated during one performance, May-May and Rose, in disguise, form their own cheering section: "Hooray for the Golly Sisters!" they cry. Ditto for this entertaining encore. ~--Julie Corsaro
