Gr 4-8It is difficult to tell how much Wukovits is fictionalizing in this biography. Without citing any sources, he makes statements such as "Annie, a small, slim girl with keen eyes who sported chestnut hair that fell to her shoulders, completed her chores around the cabin without complaint, but she missed Jacob and Mary Jane" (her father and sister who died when she was six years old). Oakley's special relationship with Sitting Bull is briefly covered, as is her long-term relationship with Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show. Coverage is chronological and well organized, and black-and-white period photographs add to the attractive format of the book. Wukovits writes about his subject with feeling and a personal touch. Although recent books about Annie Oakley are available, most of the entries in the brief list for further reading are from the `70s and `80s.Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA (c) Copyright 2010. The eponymous volumes focus on individual figures; 'The Gunslingers' is a collective biography of Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, and other famous gunmen. Written to formula, the books present a sometimes superficial rendering of each subject's life, but they also contain an appreciation for the Wild West and the legends it fostered. The accompanying historical photographs contain a few gory elements. Chronologies are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
